How it works

Connections, not a hotel network

ITHF members open their doors — and their cities — to each other. Here is exactly how it works.

The ground rules

Simple, friendly and voluntary

Every connection is a cultural exchange between Rotarians. These four rules keep it that way.

1

30 days ahead

Reach out at least 30 days before your travel dates so a host has time to plan.

2

At the host’s discretion

Connections depend on a host’s availability and interest — a friendly reply is the only thing to expect.

3

Arranged directly

Everything is worked out member to member and stays flexible: a coffee, a city tour, a meal, or a stay.

4

No obligation

Hosting is voluntary. ITHF is not a bed-and-breakfast service or a home-hotel network.

What a connection can be

From a coffee to a few days at home

The choice is always made between the host and the visiting Rotarian.

Meet up

An evening at a restaurant, a coffee, a guided walk around the city.

Share a meal

A home-cooked dinner and an evening of stories about life in your countries.

Stay a while

When it suits the host, a short hosted stay — usually two or three days.

Connections

Friendships that cross borders

A few of the connections ITHF members have shared.

Linda (British Columbia) & Sita (Nepal)

Linda travelled to Nepal for a Global Grant project and contacted Sita in Kathmandu. Sita invited her to stay for the last two days — “a lovely experience and a wonderful way to leave Nepal.”

Don & Linda (California) & Aircon (Taiwan)

Aircon arranged for Don and Linda to volunteer for a month teaching in a small Taiwanese town, and hosted them in Taipei. “Seeing any country with a local is what ITHF is all about.”

Sheila & Bill and Scott & June (British Columbia)

They met on a Rotary Friendship Exchange to Brazil, joined ITHF together, and are now best friends who have travelled on exchanges to England and Sweden, and cruised together.

Ian & Eleanor (New Zealand) & Jochen (Germany)

German visitors Jochen and Angela looked up ITHF members before touring New Zealand and found Ian — a fellow retired police chief. The “old coppers” traded stories in Napier.
